Capleton & Jazzwad – Si Mi Yah

“Si Mi Yah”—Jamaican shorthand for “see me here”—reads as an announcement rather than an explanation, language suited to Capleton’s long-established habit of making presence itself part of the performance. The St. Mary deejay has never used his voice as mere decoration: its gruff, gravelly weight and preacher’s emphasis can turn a plain declaration into a public address.

That force comes from a career that moved from late-1980s dancehall into the Rastafarian, message-led work with which he became most strongly identified through the 1990s and 2000s. Prophecy placed him in reggae’s crossover moment, while More Fire broadened the frame with roots-conscious material without softening his deejay edge. Purification, judgement, resistance and spiritual resolve have remained central ideas in his catalogue, giving his fire-and-brimstone reputation real musical substance.

Jazzwad is no arbitrary name beside Capleton. Paul “Jazzwad” Yebuah produced Capleton’s “Bun Dung Dreddie, ” a hard-edged session that caught the singer in an especially confrontational mode, moving from clipped warnings into full chant. That earlier connection is a useful point of reference here. On a title that says, in effect, “here I am, ” Capleton’s enduring strength is his ability to make self-presentation sound like conviction rather than nostalgia.
