The pull here is Thriller U, who turns up twice and gives Scientific Master Mix Showcase Vol. 1 its sharpest edge, first beside Flourgan on “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and then on his own with “Ram Dance Teacher. ” Around him, Mixing Lab keeps the set moving through late-’80s dancehall with a singer-heavy lineup that folds in Johnnie Clarke, Sugar Minott, Ruddy Thomas, Junior Brammer, and the pairing of Sligo and General Trees on “Hold Pon Yu Lover. ” There’s a nice back-and-forth between sweeter lovers-rock phrasing and rougher deejay energy, so the riddim never sits in one pocket for too long. Daddy Lizzard and Red Rose open with the lively “Young Gal Pickney A Wine, ” but it’s the Thriller U cuts that leave the cleanest mark and give the whole showcase its most memorable push.
