Mafia and Fluxy lean into a compact, singer-heavy dancehall set here, and that’s a little different from the bigger, more sprawling productions people often associate with the duo. Say R Riddim runs six cuts deep, all from the same camp, with “Excess Baggage” opening the set in a plaintive, melodic lane and “Rice and Peas” giving the whole thing a cheekier title and feel. “Say My Name” and “Never Gonna Let You Go” keep the mood on the lovers’ side, with the kind of tidy, mid-tempo swing Mafia and Fluxy have always handled well. Released on September 16, 2016, the EP landed in a year when the pair were especially active, and this one sits neatly among their other 2016 work without trying to be bigger than it needs to be.
