The groove here sits in that sweet spot between rootsy reggae and heavyweight sound system pressure: warm bass, crisp drums, and a live-band feel that gives Mr. Williamz’s “Saturday Night (Reggae Version)” plenty of room to work, while Tippa Irie’s “Mini Bus Man” and Myki Tuff’s “War General” each push the cut in their own direction. Friendly Fire Music originally framed the project as a de-mix of a Chopstick Dubplates jungle tune, and that history matters because you can hear how naturally the idea was reworked into a reggae riddim rather than forced into one. Myki Tuff’s cut had already made noise before the full set surfaced, but the trio works best as a small, focused session rather than a crowded compilation. It sits neatly in Friendly Fire’s Birmingham catalogue, alongside the label’s other band-driven riddims that lean on musicianship as much as dubplate energy.
