Harry Mudie’s Rome Riddim pulls together late-60s roots from Moods, Moodisc, Studio One and City Line, with the various-label set tracing the same theme through a handful of strong cuts rather than one single version. Jo Jo Bennett’s Rome from 1969 sits right at the center of it, while Big Joe’s Forward Home From Rome, Lloyd Jones’ Rome and Gladstone Anderson and Mudie’s All Stars’ Leaving Rome help show how widely the rhythm travelled. Harry Mudie’s hand is clear throughout, and the sequence later stretches into Bunny Maloney’s 1985 take and King Tubby and Mudie’s All Stars’ Roman Dub, giving the riddim a long afterlife beyond its original 1969 roots.
