Halfway through 2009, Young Veterans were leaning into a sharper, more vocal-driven dancehall style, and Reality Check Riddim catches that mood with a compact set of tunes that keeps the focus on message and delivery. Anthony B’s “I Nahhh” is the obvious pull here, all urgency and attitude, while Mr Perfect’s “Can’t Get Over This” and Deva Bratt’s “Give The Youths A Try” push the riddim in a more conscious direction. The project runs to nine cuts with five artists, and Young Veterans even fold themselves into the set with “Jim Screechy” in both raw and clean versions before closing on the version, which feels like a deliberate move to let the riddim breathe after the vocal run.
