1967 rocksteady from Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle camp, Only A Smile is best remembered for The Paragons’ original cut, with John Holt’s soulful lead giving the tune its classic smooth edge. The same rhythm has since carried later versions by Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs, U Roy, Admiral Tibet, Prince Malachi and others, which says plenty about how durable the backing has been. Duke Reid’s production helped define Treasure Isle’s golden run in the late 1960s, and this set sits right in that lane with the original Paragons single at its center and later roots and dancehall reinterpretations filling out the picture.
