Case of the Ex singer Mya is delving into dancehall. The RnB star is finding her feet in the dancehall genre having featured on a track with Ding Dong, Handsfree. The track comes off Sexting Riddim released on the 14th June 2019.
The RnB artist gives a solid account of herself keeping true to her style and not necessarily going the full raunchy route like other female artists in Jamaica. The riddim also features other artists including Konshens, Beenie Man, Christopher Martin, Stadic, Patrice Roberts and Stoneboy.
Mya also features on Jah Cure’s recently released album Royal Soldier. Their track together ‘Only You‘ is set to have its video released soon.
Mya to be fair is no stranger to the dancehall genre having once featured on Beenie Man’s hit Girls Dem Sugar back in 2000.
It is always refreshing to see artists trying out different things with their music. Mya’s two recent tracks with these Jamaican artists showcases her wide range of skills. She can pass off as a reggae/dancehall artist. What makes her unique is that she can pull off the reggae style like Queen Ifrica or Alaine and at the same time can do the dancehall thing minus the Dovey Magnum or Ishawna raunchiness.
The visuals in Handsfree make for a cool and very colourful video. The RnB star showcases her beauty and we are reminded why we fell in love with her many years ago when she released tracks like Fallen, My Love is Like Wo and Case of the Ex in the late 90s and early 2000s.
We look forward to many more reggae and dancehall collaborations from Mya. It feels like a stroke of genius in resuscitating her career as she has been rather quiet over the years. Soon we might be able to speak about her in the same breath as other artists like Shenseea and pop mogul Rihanna. Let’s hope she keeps at it and look out for her latest video with Jah Cure.
