After all the Grammy talk in the past weeks about voting rights and more Jamaicans being part of the voting process, the nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards were released last week on the 15 of November 2022. With 5 nominations in 2022 for Best Reggae Album, then having a non-Jamaican winner in Virginia-based SOJA, for Beauty In The Silence. There will not be any surprises for the Caribbean community in 2023 as the line-up is all Jamaican.
Best Reggae Album
- Kabaka Pyramid – The Kalling
- Protoje – Third Times The Charm
- Koffee – Gifted
- Sean Paul – Scorcha
- Shaggy – Come Fly Wid Mi
Besides Kabaka Pyramid with his first-ever nomination for the award for Best Reggae Album, there are the ‘usual suspects’ for the award. And when I say usual suspects I mean artists who have been nominated or won the award in previous years. Kabaka Pyramid starts things off with his 2nd studio album The Kalling which was released by Ghetto Youths Int’l and Bebble Rock Music.
Released in September 2022 as well, was Protoje’s album, Third Times The Charm. Released by his very own label, Inn. Digg. Nation. Collection and RCA Records, Protoje boasts his 6th studio album and follows up his 2018 nomination for A Matter of Time for the same award.
22-year-old Koffee received her second nomination for Gifted which follows up her award-winning Rapture released in 2020. Holding the record for the youngest winner in the 37-year history of the awards, Koffee continues to make strides in her thriving career and the Spanish Town artist looks to make it a second win in two.
Dancehall[/embed] stalwart Sean Paul makes the lineup with his tenth Grammy nomination. After the huge success of Dutty Rock in the early 2000s, the Best Reggae Album award has eluded the artist and Sean looks to make it a brace with Scorcha. Completing the lineup is another legend in Shaggy for Come Fly Wid Mi.  Not inspired by Frank Sinatra’s Com Fly with Me, Shaggy looks to add to his awards following up Grammy wins for Bombastic and 44/876 with Sting for the same award.
The winners will be announced on the 5th of February 2023 at the Los Angeles Crypto.com arena.
