The Afrobeats renaissance continues, evidenced by its inclusion as a category in this year’s (2023) edition of the MTV EMAs. Following an announcement on the 4th of September 2023. MTV EMA will include a Best Afrobeats Category, scheduled to take place on November 5, 2023, in Paris, France, to be broadcast live to more than 150 countries.
With the nominations already out, familiar artists have been included namely Davido, Rema, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Aya Nakamura from France. In addition, Rema and Selena Gomez’s Calm Down got the nod for ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ categories. While Burna Boy scored a nomination for ‘Best Live Performer,’ competing alongside Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd.
