Quiet heat. Stone Cold keeps My Best Girl moving on a warm, easy-loping reggae groove, and Freddie McGregor’s title cut feels like the heart of it, with George Nooks on “Your Eyes” and Richie Stephens on “Thank You Lord” giving the riddim a clean, rootsy pull. Anthony B’s “Strength To Strength” adds a sharper edge, while Tony Curtis and Singing Melody close in sweet harmony on “Thank You, ” which feels like the sort of pairing this 2001 set was made for. Mark “Stone Cold” Hudson produced it, and the little surprise is the link back to Duke Reid’s old Treasure Isle “My Best Girl” tune, with that version cut tucked in almost like a nod to where the whole thing began.
