Mendocino Riddim – Rsqthp Music Group

Mendocino Riddim comes out of RSQTHP Music Group, the imprint tied to Survivor Slim, the Kingston-born producer, artist and music entrepreneur behind Red Square Tropical Heat Productions. The project landed in 2013 and sits squarely in that era when Caribbean digital riddims were being voiced by a mix of established names and label regulars.

The groove has a clean, mid-tempo bounce with a warm bassline and a bright, slightly stripped-down arrangement that leaves space for the singers and deejays to work. It is more roots-conscious than hard dancehall, but it still moves with enough forward drive to keep the juggling energy alive. That balance suits the lineup well.

Bugle’s “Time” gives the riddim one of its most memorable turns, with his reflective, conscientious approach fitting the song’s title and tone. Anthony B’s “Can’t Cool Can’t Out” brings the veteran fireman energy he is known for, pushing the cut with urgency and authority. Delly Ranx, who has long moved between deejaying and production, locks into the rhythm with “More Sellers Than Buyers, ” while Ginjah’s “Sunshine” softens the texture with a smoother, melodic feel. Xyclone’s “Smoking” featuring Treez adds a younger, more street-level edge, and Wayne Lyrics’ “Stand Strong” and Survivor Slim’s “Continue Strive” underline the uplift that runs through the whole set.

It is a compact but well-aimed juggling riddim, with conscious themes, sturdy voices and enough variety to keep each cut distinct without breaking the flow.
