Kwashawna Records kept M16 Riddim taut and militant in 2019, with a title that matches the energy of the music. The label is Shawn Storm’s own imprint, and this release sat in the same run of self-directed dancehall projects he was rolling out that year. It came through as a three-cut juggling: Shawn Storm on “M16, ” Vybz Kartel on “Stand Strong, ” and Sikka Rymes on “Dirt. ”

The riddim itself has a sharp, spare pulse that leaves plenty of room for the voice. The drum pattern hits with a clipped, marching feel, while the bass stays heavy and narrow rather than glossy. That gives the whole set a stern, street-level edge instead of a carnival bounce.
