King Jammy circles back to his own roots here, using a four-cut tribute to Black Uhuru’s classic “I Love King Selassie” and setting Chronixx’s “King Selassie Throne” against his own “Selassie on his White Horse” and Prince Jammy’s “His Imperial Majesty. ” The connection to Black Uhuru is the key: this is tied to the 2016 New Sounds of Freedom project, which revisits the band’s late-’70s Love Crisis era and its later Black Sounds of Freedom rework. Chronixx is the clear contemporary anchor, but the older voices keep the whole thing in lineage rather than nostalgia. It moves with a spare, militant reggae pulse, the bass staying low and steady while the vocal lines ride clean over the drum pattern and dubby space.
