Real Links Productions put out GTA Affect Riddim in February 2016, and the set plays like a straight dancehall juggling with a warm, mid-tempo bounce rather than a hard-edged street anthem. The rhythm sits around the 93 BPM mark and leaves plenty of room for melody, which is why the project can move from Wayne Wonder’s smooth Let Me Be the One to Busy Signal’s sharper Lonely Remix without losing its shape.

Wayne Wonder brings the veteran singer’s easy, romantic touch, while Bugle’s If a Man Want You adds his thoughtful, sung-deejay style. Exco Levi, a Jamaican-born artist who built his name in Canada, gives Da Ras Yah a conscious edge, and Busy Signal’s cut brings the kind of recognisable energy that has made him one of dancehall’s most reliable voices for years. Chino, Lexxus, Qraig, Eyesus, Bro Falcon, J Logix, Triston 5 Star, Shawn Bush and Fyah Fashion fill out the juggling with songs that keep the theme in the everyday lane: love talk, nightlife, flirtation and that loose, party-first GTA attitude.

What makes the riddim click is the contrast between the singers and the more rowdy turns. Summa Ina T-Dot gives Eyesus a Toronto-coded brag, Hold Yuh Man lets Lexxus work the flirtation angle, and 416 ties the project to the city in a way that gives the whole release a little local identity. GTA Affect Riddim is one of those mid-2010s dancehall sets that lives on the strength of its voices and a beat sturdy enough to hold them all.
