Drop Leaf Riddim – Don Corleon

Don Corleon’s Drop Leaf Riddim arrived in 2005 as one of the producer’s defining early riddims, and it still sounds like a turning point. Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett had already built a reputation for sleek, radio-friendly dancehall, and here he pushes a softer one-drop pulse with a bright guitar figure, rolling percussion, and a warm, liquid bassline that gives the whole set an almost meditative sway.

The strength of the project is how different voices settle into that groove. T. O. K. ’s “Footprints” remains one of the sharpest cuts, lifting the riddim with a clean hook and an easy crossover feel. Jah Cure’s “Longing For” and Luciano’s “For The Leaders” sit deeper in the roots pocket, letting the rhythm breathe while leaning into uplift and reflection. Sizzla’s “Be Strong” adds urgency, while Morgan Heritage’s “Your Best Friend” and Maxi Priest’s “I Believe” bring a smoother, more melodic edge. Gentleman’s “Intoxication” fits the riddim’s laid-back swing, and Tanya Stephens’ “After You” gives it a more direct, adult voice. The Nina Sky and Vybz Kartel combination on “In A Dream” adds a pop-dancehall contrast that widens the reach even further.

Anthony B’s “Get You Girl” and Junior Reid’s “Please Officer” underline how well the rhythm handled both conscious singing and streetwise dancehall. Even the version cut feels like part of the statement: Drop Leaf was less about aggression than atmosphere, a modern one-drop built for singers, selectors, and replay value.
