Dusty roots. Donkey Riddim takes its cue from the old “Ride Me Donkey” tune by The Tennors and flips it into a Mexico-made dancehall session with a strong Spanish-language feel. El Cuartito de a Jah Records and TnT Music keep the cuts tight and steady, and the lineup leans toward heartfelt chants and everyday street talk rather than swagger for its own sake. Neto Ganja Style’s “Las Memorias, ” Jacobo Govea’s “Mi Reggae, ” and Salvador Soul Zystem’s “Mighty Man” set the tone early, while Roe Delgado’s “Dime Lo Que Sientes” and Mike Dread’s “Corre A Esconderte” push the riddim into sharper, more urgent territory. The whole thing reads like a scene snapshot from 2013, with artists from different corners of the Mexican reggae network passing through the same groove. The last word belongs to Mike Dread, whose “Corre A Esconderte” leaves the riddim on a nervy, fast-moving note.
