4 Star Showcase – Rad Records

This one sits a little apart from the usual one-riddim showcase because it feels more like a small, carefully chosen singer-and-song set than a big various-artists shuffle. Rad Records lines up Black Uhuru, Carlton Manning, Dennis Brown and Leroy Sibbles across eight cuts, and the sweet spot is the Dennis Brown material: “Together Brothers” has that easy, uplifting push, while “Troubled World” leans harder into the rootsy, weary edge that made his voice so reliable in the mid-’80s. Carlton Manning’s “Love Me Forever” keeps the mood warm and melodic, and Black Uhuru’s “Rent Man” adds a tougher, more militant cut to the package. The set was issued in 1985 and, from what survives in circulation, it was compiled and produced with Dennis Brown in the mix, which gives the whole thing a strong, era-specific feel rather than just another label sampler.
