Honey Pot Riddim – Silly Walks Discotheque

Silly Walks Discotheque turned Honey Pot into the kind of rootsy digital juggling that can travel from sound system to radio to street corner without losing its bite. The Hamburg crew had already built a reputation as a reggae sound system, production team and label, and this release became a key early chapter in their own imprint, arriving in 2013 with a warm, brisk one-drop pulse and a clean, unfussy mix that leaves space for the singers. The rhythm has a light bounce rather than a heavy stomp, which is part of why it opened so well for conscious tunes and feel-good hooks.

Chronixx’s “Smile Jamaica” is the tune that pushed the riddim into wider view, with its easy confidence, uplifting refrain and that unmistakable rise that made it hard to miss. Jah9 brings a more meditative edge on “Brothers, ” while Exco Levi and Kabaka Pyramid team up on “Strive” for a sharper, more militant conversation over the same frame. Lutan Fyah’s “Lonesome Soldier” and Torch’s “Good Reggae Music” keep the roots pressure on, and Ginjah’s “Sweet Killer” adds a smoother, soul-dipped touch.

Daville’s “One In A Million” gives the set a more melodic balance, and RC’s “Why Should I” helps round out a lineup that moves between uplift, reflection and straight-ahead roots stance. In scene memory, Honey Pot is inseparable from Chronixx’s breakout moment, but the strength of the project is how naturally the other cuts sit beside it.
