Afrobeats pioneer Wizkid is the first African artist to be awarded the BRIT Billion Award. The award is given to artists who surpass one billion digital streams in the United Kingdom. Wizkid celebrated the achievement following his performance at the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Stadium in London, where he became the first and only African artist to headline and perform at the esteemed venue.
It’s no small feat to achieve 1 billion streams so you need to give it up for the 33-year-old Nigerian superstar. Some say his iconic Ojuelegba track paved the way for him and many other artists on the Afrobeats tip. However, he has had more success with a slew of other chart-topping songs that enabled him to sell out Tottenham’s London Stadium.
Wizkid whose real name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun has been in the game since 2011 and has had much success with tracks like the aforementioned, One Dance and Come Closer both with Drake, Energy alongside Skepta and Essence more recently with Tems. With two deep albums in Made In Lagos and More Love and Less Ego Wizkid has cemented himself as a global musical icon.
