Buju Banton cant seem to stop making the headlines lately. Directly or indirectly his work seems to be on peoples mind. His track ‘Murda She Wrote’ from 1997 was officially included in the latest Bad Boys movie released on the 17th Jan 2020. Furthermore, his track with Wayne Wonder Bonafide was sampled by dancehall princess Shenseea in her latest dancehall/hip hop tune ‘IDKW‘ with Swae Lee, Young Thug and Rvssian.
The track can only catapult Shenseea’s public image to a bigger audience. The video has garnered 1m views on Youtube in just 3 days from its release. This is probably due to artists like Young Thug and Swae Lee who are very popular in the United States. Shenseea has grown to be one of the prominent female dancehall artists. Her touring schedule includes numerous countries including Israel, Belgium, the Caribbean and the Middle East. It was only in 2016 when she featured on Vybz Kartel’s track ‘Loodi’ which attracted peoples attention. She had a good 2019 signing for Interscope Records and made a solid commercial track ‘Blessed‘ with American rapper Tyga.
Sheseea whose real name is Chinsea Lee, has not been crowned the Queen of dancehall yet. However, I am sure Spice continually keeps checking herself and looking in her rear-view mirror. Currently there is a beef simmering with another female deejay in Jada Kingdom and Shenseea has chosen not to respond to her track ‘Shen Hung‘ released in late 2019. Jada Kingdom directed the scathing diss track, just two days after Shenseea had targeted her during the Red Bull Culture Clash.
Vybz Kartel who is affiliated to both artists has chosen to stay out of the cat fight. Having worked with Shenseea in the past and just released a track with Jada. The Teacha has chosen not to take sides so as not to rock the boat for future tracks probably.
Shenseea has chosen not to further antagonize Jada. Rather, she has chosen to quietly make music and evidently the energy is better spent as the collaboration with the American heavy weights is a hit. We look forward to more dancehall/hip hop collaborations as she continues to grow in the industry.
