Shenseea In Touch With Old School Dancehall

shenseea in touch with old school dancehall

Dancehall’s sweetheart, Shenseea, dropped her latest single Sold Out, which follows her last single Curious. Produced by London On Tha Track, the track is accompanied by a vibrant video, set in the streets of Jamaica, and directed by Aka. Ruppi. The video features cameos from her former manager and friend Romeich and former label mate Ding Dong.

Shenseea who is now based in the United States of America, is looking to tailor her music to suit her new fanbase in the States. Speaking on a new episode of The Shop, Shenseea eluded to the fact that American listeners are still hung up on the old dancehall vibe. To be fair, it’s not just the United States, but the world over, barring the Caribbean.

When I came to America, it’s like when I go to clubs, people are still enjoying the old school dancehall. The new dancehall has not broken ground here.” Shenseea told The Shop guests. She went on to say,

I have been doing new school dancehall but ever since I came here to America, I said, Wait. How are you guys still listening to these songs and be like ‘Oh, this is the jam?’ Like we hardly listen to that in Jamaica. How are you guys still stuck on this type of music? Don’t get me wrong, vintage music is very legendary.”

“So I feel like, I take it upon myself to be like, Nah, I gotta help you guys catch on to what’s happening down there. So I try to mix both.”

Upon listening to some of her other recent singles I can understand how she is trying to keep that old-school feel to her music while at the same time maintaining the new trap dancehall sound. Have a listen to tracks like Run Run, Henkel Glue and Sold Out and you will hear the combination.
