Gone are the days where the likes of Vybz Kartel and Sean Paul dominated riddims and you wouldn’t give other artists a second listen. Despite the fact that Vybz is still dominating, there are instances where he gets overshadowed on a riddim and Incredible Riddim is testament to that. Incredible Riddim features a Vybz Kartel/Sikka Rymes collaboration, Sean Paul, Charly Black and Ovo’s Popcaan.
Making use of a memorable rhythm Popcaan out shined other artists in Mamakita. Sticking to an erotic theme the cut is a definite home run showing another side of the Gaza student. The track follows the release of other 2020 classics including Promise, Sex on The River, Jealousy Die Slow and his Vanquish album.
Kudos to TJ Records though for making such a memorable rhythm. With the ongoing Covoid-19 coronavirus pandemic we can at least look forward to good music. Despite not being able to enjoy them in a party setting. Things will normalise eventually right?
Special mention to Sean Paul who finds another way to remain relevant in what has been a long and illustrious career. The Dutty Rock star shines in Bend You Back, another erotic jam while Konshens does his thing in Backaz.
In light of the Vybz Kartel’s failed appeal to overturn his murder conviction. The status quo in dancehall remains the same. Buju Banton’s recent comments on dancehall not having evolved since his incarceration and release has sparked an argument among dancehall players in denial that Vybz Kartel still reigns supreme. Mr Vegas backed up Buju’s comments taking aim at Protogé. Explaining that a rastaman shouldn’t be throwing shade at an elder or veteran artist like Buju.
However, if there was an artist capable of upsetting the status quo, my money is on Popcaan. His Ovo connection works in his favour coupled with his unique style. So far so good for the Unruly Boss in 2020. We look forward to more bangers.
