Skillibeng embarked on his maiden foray into the Afro-beat scene alongside Shenseea for Wizkid’s Slip N Slide track. The song features on Wizkid’s latest album More Love Less Ego. Unlike Skillibeng, Shenseea is no stranger to Afro-beats having worked with Fireboy DML alongside Chris Brown in Diana. The pair represent Jamaica with Wizkid in this chilled intimate track.
More Love Less Ego was dropped on 11 November 2022 and sold 13,000 units in the first week. Produced by Nigeria’s P2J, Slip N Slide currently has over a million streams on Spotify and has been viewed over 400,000 on Youtube. Following Burna Boy’s successful album Love Damini, Wizkid’s album has a lot of pressure to align with the success of Burna Boy’s and time will tell how people react to it. That said, Slip N Slide debuted at no. 19 on the Billboard US Afrobeats Song charts. And time will tell how successful the track will be.
Inspired by Bob Marley, Wizkid has coincidentally partnered up with Jamaicans in Slip N Slide, however, there is nothing really Jamaican that Shenseea and Skillibeng contributed except their unique vocals.
“I was like: ‘Yo, we’re watching a Bob Marley play and this guy died decades ago.’ I didn’t even know that he died at 36. He did so much at a young age. It just reaffirms what I do; I have to keep taking this to the highest heights. Because I know one day they’re definitely going to create a play about me,” he said.
Both Shenseea and Skillibeng have been blowing up the waves in 2022 and are arguably the Caribbean’s top artists for the year. As they are both nominated for Best Caribbean Act at the upcoming MOBO awards.
As I always say it’s always a pleasure when artists from different cultures collaborate. It works as a platform to grow each other’s brands and at the end of the day, music is always the winner.
