Popcaan seems to have evolved into the model artist, as he has become Mr. Know-it-all, when it comes to all things dancehall. He recently announced that he will be parting ways with Drakes OVO Sound Record label to be an independent artist. It was only in 2018 when the artist signed with OVO and now Popcaan seems to have garnered all he needs from the label and is ready to go on his own.
Not clear what he means by soon, but Popcaan has come out explaining his love-hate relationship with the label. While he appreciates the avenues and doors opened by the label since 2018 Popcaan is ready is go on his own. Fresh from the release of his latest album Great Is He, Popcaan is promising another album this year. He has also come out urging his fellow artists to drop more albums as opposed to the singles culture in the dancehall space.
“No one’s doing it,” he said. “I try to appeal to my Jamaican artists, telling all of them to put out more albums. People just see Jamaican music as singles.”
You can almost taste the arrogance of the Unruly Boss and it is reflected in his music. Great Is He is still trending on the Billboard Reggae Album charts, backed by artists like Drake, Burna Boy and Toni-Anne Singh, however, its success has not reached Grammy award-worthy levels in my opinion. But time will tell. Popcaan (Mr. Know-it-all) continues to go on about how he is the benchmark in the industry but I guess that’s what the industry is all about. Who is the buddest mun right?
We get to look forward to another album at least. These are Vybz Kartel levels, so I guess the arrogance is coming from somewhere. His Great Is He European tour is set to start in May and that will stand as a good marker for Grammy success in 2024.
