It’s one thing to drop singles here and there, staying in the game and collaborating with various artists. However, what really sets an artist apart from the rest is when they release a body of work in the form of an album. It can either be a short and sweet collection with five or six songs or a 45 song bible collection like Chris Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon. There are two artists in a particular who I feel it is high-time they drop an album for the dancehall fraternity. There is the highly anticipated R9 album from Rihanna we have been waiting for for over four years now and also Mr David Constatine Brooks popularly known as Mavado.
The Gully Gawd has been blowing hot and cold for the last five years and it is high time he dropped an album. With 2 studio albums to his name, which include Gangsta for Life: The Symphony (2007), Mr Brookes…A Better Tomorrow (2009). The world awaits another creative body of work from the Gully Gawd.
In terms of relevance, Mavado who now lives in the USA, is still in touch with the dancehall community and has dropped significant tracks like Location, Feelings, Money and Done in 2022 alone. In addition, and most importantly (because of my African decent) Mavado features on the Billboard Top Triller Charts with Ghanaian artist Kidi in a track called Blessed. Now at No. 7, the Billboard Top Triller Global highlights the biggest tracks on a global stage.
We[/embed] all remember the rivalry between Mavado and Vybz Kartel in the early 2000s. It seems as if Kartel fans feel justified in saying Vybz rules the airwaves so the question is what happened to Mavado? A lot is happening in his life, with his son behind bars for murder and fake warrants of his arrest going around, but, come on Vado we need an album. If you happen to read this Mr Brookes, do the right thing.
I will say the same thing to Riri, the world awaits. Maybe it’s a tactic to keep us salivating for more. It seems to be working but its about time now.
