After months of pleas from his fans Alkaline has finally sparked a comeback in releasing his latest single ‘Flashback’.
With a futuristic introduction where you feel like something is about to happen in a summer Sci-fi Blockbuster, Alkaline makes his comeback singing out “memories”, reminiscent of the times when he was the hottest thing in dancehall.
Born Earlan Bartley, the studio and communications student from the University of the West Indies has had a good come up in the dancehall industry filled with its controversies. The distinctive look, coupled with his gangster personae has come with its incidents for example getting targeted by missiles (bottle) thrown at him during some of his concerts. And a fair share of cancellations of his overseas tour performances.
Alkaline also known as Vendetta has had a fair share of hit songs with his debut studio album ‘New Level Unlocked’ once topping the Billboard Reggae Charts. He also has had some memorable collaborations which are also worth mentioning which also showcase his diversity in the music industry, delving into reggae and hip hop. Alkaline has had hits with, Mavado, Sean Paul, French Montana and Shaggy just to mention some of the big hitters.
My personal favourite which flew under the radar, was a collaboration with West London based trio WSTRN. ‘Textin’ has a bright and catchy riddim, which gels well with the vocals from the RNB and Soul outfit and Alkaline’s verse caps off what is a dope song. I am sure it is one of those songs that will gradually get traction over time as it grows in people’s hearts.
‘Flashback’ is what we have to work with for now and from first listen it is sure to be a summer banger. The dancehall fraternity can now talk about someone else and review their music as opposed to the usual Popcaan, Vybz Kartel or Govana.
