Who are the Queens of Dancehall

who are the queens of dancehall?

Grace Latoya Hamilton, popularly known as Spice, is refusing to hang up her crown to other young contenders as the Queen of Dancehall. Highlighted in her latest single titled Queen of The Dancehall, 40-year-old Spice seems to have a whole new lease on life. Following her harrowing experience with her botched cosmetic surgery, Spice is back to her old self and is releasing fresh music every week. Queen of The Dancehall follows the release of God A Bless Me and her foray into reggae with Spice Marley.

In the spirit of talking of Queens of Dancehall, it is worth mentioning women who are contenders for the coveted position. And I feel I need to remove all ambiguity in the term woman as it seems to be a controversial issue. A woman is a female human being. No room for people who ‘identify’ as women. Am sticking to biology here. But, imagine someone like Chronic Law or Squash suddenly turned round and said they identified as women. Would they still be as successful?

Ok, back to the contenders. We cannot look past Shenseea who is poised to release her second studio album this year. The album will follow Alpha which was released in 2022. Shenseea has everything going for her and may already be the queen in many people’s minds as she is well-versed in rapping, free-styling, and has amazing vocals.

Incarcerated deejay from yester-year Ninjaman, came out weeks back talking up Tallup saying she had already dethroned Spice as the queen. Not being a hater but who is Tallup in the grand scheme of things? Spice made no comment following Ninjaman’s utterances and I will follow suit.

Moyann also makes the list as she is another fan favorite. The No Limit artist broke into the industry in 2018 and has steadily made a name for herself. However, her inability to churn out music constantly works against her and the same can be said for Jada Kingdom who is now an established dancehall player.

Last but not least, would it be fair to include Koffee? Koffee is in a different league as there is nothing queen-like about her. With all due respect. Musically speaking Koffee is up there but we cannot compare her dance skills to Spice and I am sure she wouldn’t like the moniker either way.

Spice still holds onto her crown but soon it will be time for her to pass on the flame.
