Unfortunately for the Gazanation faithful, the proclaimed Worl’Boss will not be leaving prison anytime soon.
Adija Palmer, popularly known as Vybz Kartel was dealt another blow by the justice system. The dancehall maestro lost his appeal to overturn his murder conviction which has him serving a 35 year life sentence. The only plus side in the deejay’s favour was that the court is willing to negotiate the duration of his incarceration. Mr Palmer’s defense team will have 2 days to submit extra documents to support their plea.
Having already served 9 years of his sentence, Kartel will continue to pay his dues to society for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. It’s now just a matter of how many years will be slashed from the initial sentence. Following the court’s decision Vybz will be able to move on without false hope weighing on his mind. However, Kartel’s lead attorney Tom Tavares Simpson said this before the judgement,
“I have no idea what the verdict will be, but what I will say is that it has taken almost 10 years for Vybz Kartel to get justice and people wonder why people say the justice system is broken. “We are all hoping for the best, preparing for the worst. We may have to go to the Privy Council for justice.â€
Objectively speaking has justice been served? It’s hard to believe the justice system in such a high profile case can still get it wrong 9 years on. Kartel fans argue that there were irregularities in the case findings and evidence but aren’t those just technicalities? More importantly what will this do for Kartel’s rehabilitation? The one constant that will remain is his ability to make music.
Lets hope Vybz Kartel will remain as domineering in the game for the foreseeable future and continue to make quality music. And who knows he could be a free man sooner than we actually think.
