When you are able to make a name for yourself in your country, your success hinges on being able to adapt to what the American and Europeans markets want and tailoring your sound. Focussing on the West Indies this goes for the most successful artists in the industry right now like Popcaan, Sean Paul, Shenseea and a host of others. In the case instant Masicka is the latest to sign to an American label that I am sure will catapult his career to the next level.
“Def Jam has always been the home for great artists across the wide spectrum of black music, and Masicka is very much emblematic of that vision,” said the CEO and Chairman of Def Jam Recordings, Tunji Balogun. “Representing the new wave of Jamaican dancehall and reggae, Masicka’s versatility and unique sonic perspective has the potential to impact markets all over the world. It feels like the beginning of something very special. We’re excited to welcome him to our Def Jam family,” he added while talking to Variety Magazine.
In addition to that, I would tend to echo the CEO’s sentiments as Masicka has been on the rise and has made good waves in the industry for the past 13 years. 2022 would be one of his better years as he was able to drop his first studio album titled 438. He enjoyed much success from it with hit songs like Moments, History, and Suicide Note. His collaborations added a dimension to his fanbase as he probably captured more of the pop fanbase from Steflon Don and Sean Paul’s market.
Born Javaun Fearon in Portmore JA, Masicka dropped his latest track Pieces last Friday which also features rising star Jahshii. The pair gelled well together and am sure it is not the last time we will hear from the pair. Onwards and upwards for the Genasyde artist. He sings about celebration and triumph in Pieces and it echoes my sentiments on his rise. Be sure to keep an eye out for him this year. Def Jam will definitely open new doors for the versatile artist.
