Jamaican reggae sensation Mikayla Simpson, popularly known as Koffee was detained by immigration officers in the United States after an altercation with a flight attendant. In what could be something taken from a Seinfeld episode, Koffee’s incident delayed the flight from landing culminating in Jamaican officials getting involved. The Grammy award-winning artist was subsequently processed after the intervention and permitted to enter the country without further action.
The altercation resulted after a flight attendant refused for Koffee to use the first-class bathroom as the artist was traveling in coach. I am sure Koffee must have kept it real when she was refused entry by the attendant. To that, my question is why was Koffee traveling in coach in the first place? One would assume after all her success she has gained the right to travel in first class.
The second question that I feel needs addressing is who doesn’t know Koffee? Toast, Pull Up, Lockdown? Nothing? No one picked it up on the manifest that the biggest Jamaican artist since Bob Marley is on board? Sean Paul and Shaggy just hold on. Just making a point here. Nevertheless, the incident did not escalate into something more serious. Koffee’s trip to Miami continued and Entertainment Minister Oliva ‘Babsy’ Grange has confirmed the artist is fine.
Koffee has not made an official statement and I feel it best if she just lets this go. Her manager on the other hand needs to do more to ensure her artist travels in first class next time. And as for American Airlines. Educate yourselves, please. Koffee is a Barack Obama favorite and won her first Grammy for Best Reggae Album for Rapture at 17. Subsequently, she received another nomination for her second studio album Gifted. Koffee is Jamaican royalty and I am sure all the Jamaican faithful are happy Koffee is over this meager skirmish in her career.
