FEEL THE AFRO-BEATS WAVE WITH BURNA BOY, AFRICA’S GIANT

feel the afro-beats wave with burna boy, africa’s giant

The climate is changing in the music business and I think it’s safe to admit that we are, and have been, in an Afro-beats wave, and there is no sign of it letting up. With the rise of African artists on the international stage, it seems to be heating up even more with significant strategic collaborations happening all round. The rise of artists like Stonebwoy, Davido and Mr Eazi in genres spanning from reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and RnB has grown the African brand all over the world. Songs like ‘Already’ with Beyonce and Shatta Wale and Tarrus Riley’s collaboration with Stonebwoy in ‘GYAL’ are testament to that.

The latest collaboration sees Damien Marley team up with Nigeria’s Burna Boy in ‘Different’ alongside Angelique Kidjo, in a modern dancehall jam. Burna Boy shines along with Damien in what is sure to be a recognised winner in both the afro-fusion and dancehall genres.

Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, comes from Nigeria and rose to prominence in 2012 with his breakthrough track ‘Like to Party’. The grounded, humble artist had his mother (who is also his manager) accept his BET award for 2019 Best International Act, while grabbing a drink by the bar during the award show.

With his Afro-Fusion sound he has worked with a wide range of African stars and also global stars including acts like Fall Out Boy, Dave, Beyonce and now Jamaica’s Damien Marley just to name a few.

Burna Boy recently dropped his 4th studio album African Giant which serves as an African history lesson as well as a representation of African culture. The album is a must listen to for music lovers and it’s not just because of my African heritage. It has a few reggae infused tracks and probably deserves a full album review in order for you to get context. The chap is a significant player in the business and I look forward to more singles and collaborations on the Jamaican scene.

Right now the African climate is what’s up, evident in African Giant. So it’s for basically getting some sun screen lotion and enjoying the wave.
